Basis: Einkommensteuertarif 2026 (§ 33 EStG), brackets as published by WKO. This is income tax only — it does not include social security or the favourably-taxed 13th/14th salary. Figures without warranty — not a substitute for individual tax advice.

How Austrian income tax is calculated

Austria uses a progressive income-tax tariff: income is split into bands, and each band is taxed at its own rate. Only the part of your income that falls inside a band is taxed at that band's rate — so earning one euro more never lowers your take-home pay. The first €13 539 is tax-free.

Taxable income (2026)Rate on the amount in this band
Up to €13,5390 %
€13,539 – €21,99220 %
€21,992 – €36,45830 %
€36,458 – €70,36540 %
€70,365 – €104,85948 %
€104,859 – €1,000,00050 %
Over €1,000,00055 %

Your average rate is the total tax divided by your income; your marginal rate is the rate on your next euro of income — the band you have reached. The two are never the same until you are well into the top band.

What this calculator does not include

This tool computes income tax only. It does not give you net take-home pay, because Austrian net pay involves two more things:

  • Social security. Employees pay contributions to the ÖGK (health, pension, unemployment, accident); the self-employed pay the SVS. These are separate from income tax and are largely deductible before tax is calculated. See our German SVS pages for the current rates.
  • The 13th and 14th salary. Most Austrian employees receive two extra monthly payments a year (Sonderzahlungen). These are taxed separately and far more favourably than regular pay via the annual sixth (Jahressechstel), which a simple bracket calculation cannot capture.

For a full gross-to-net figure, or anything specific to your situation, consult a Steuerberater (tax adviser).

Frequently asked questions

What counts as taxable income in Austria?

Taxable income (Einkommen) is what remains after business expenses, income-related deductions and special items are subtracted from your total income. The bracket rates below apply to that figure — not to your gross salary or gross turnover. Social-security contributions (SVS or ÖGK) are separate and are generally deductible.

What is the tax-free amount?

Income up to €13 539 is taxed at 0 % in 2026. Only the portion of income above each threshold is taxed at that bracket's rate, so your average rate is always lower than your top (marginal) rate.

Does this include social security and the 13th/14th salary?

No. This tool calculates income tax (Einkommensteuer) on a given taxable income only. Employees also pay social-security contributions (ÖGK), and the 13th and 14th monthly salaries (Sonderzahlungen) are taxed separately at a favourable rate. The self-employed pay contributions to the SVS. For a full net-pay picture, speak to a Steuerberater (tax adviser).
